Monday, October 5th - a Day in Venice

Monday started out with a light fog which burned off later in the day. We went across the Rialto bridge to the market. Unfortunately Monday isn’t a very good day for that – there’s basically only fruit and vegetables. But the people watching is still entertaining. We meandered up towards San Marco and when we got there we found half the square a little flooded. The fourth was the full moon and combined with the wind direction the tides have been high, but not really an acqua alta. Anyway, along the side where the famous Harry’s Bar is, the raised walkways had been set up and people were crossing single file.

We walked up the arcade at the other side of the square to the piazza in front of the Doge’s Palace. We found a cafĂ© unflooded and stopped for a drink. It was very pleasant listening to the pianist and watching the crowds of people go by.

Later we wandered back toward the hotel stopping to light a candle and say a lost luggage prayer (one suitcase hadn’t made it) at the church in the Campo de San Moise. Perhaps it did some good because when we arrived at Al Ponte Antico we were told the bag had been found and should be on its way to us!

I think Venice is best seen from the water, so we took the vaporetto out to Lido (the end of the line) and then rode back past St. Mark’s and the entire length of the Grand Canal in a seat on the outside deck. The boat stops at every station and the views and photo ops along the way are incredible.

Before dinner we again sat on the terrace for a drink or two and were joined by some fellow cruisers. The evening was beautiful and again the lights on the canal were magical. We dined at one of our favorite restaurants, Alla Borsa, and then were off to bed. Oh, the suitcase was sitting in all its splendor when we returned home.
